The Agriculture Minister Miguel Arias Cañete, has recognized the situation of serious crisis facing the milk and the risk of their disappearance failure to take the necessary measures to ensure its competitiveness. Spain has a milk quota of 6.4 million tonnes and an actual production of six million, compared with a total demand of dairy products of nine million tonnes. That difference is covered by imports, mainly of French milk, cheese and Germans, at prices much below minimum. Galicia concentrates 40% of milk production.
Problems in the sector mainly reflect four reasons: soaring feed prices, inability to pass on cost increases in selling prices, use of milk in supermarkets as a low-priced product claim (70 % is white label) and milk and cheese entries from France and Germany below the minimum production costs.
The minister has asked the industrial contracts and fair prices to farmers and large retailers, who do not use milk as a low priced product claim. This highlights the political aspect of Mercadona, which has asked its integrated to raise prices to farmers at 1.50 cents liter in order to pass the increase to consumers.
In the coming weeks is to sign an agreement between producers, industry and distribution to clarify and seek a better balance in the value chain of a product right out of origin to the consumer.
