The debt crisis of Greece opens a confrontation within the troika. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on eurozone countries and the European Central Bank (ECB) to take losses on their loans to Greece to reduce the debt burden of Athens as it did private banks.
The petition has caused a clash between the IMF and the other members of the troika (European Commission and ECB), to allow more time supporters of the Hellenic nation-to-two years to correct its budget gap. Europeans are inclined by issuing more short-term debt, lowering interest rates on loans or renewing the debt held by the ECB. The IMF rejects this workaround and commitment to debt restructuring, which would entail losses for the euro 200,000 million euros.

Troika's plan to help Greece, which now totals 240,000 million euros for the two rescues, aims to reduce its debt to 120% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020 to be sustainable and regain market confidence .
"The problem is not between the IMF and Athens, but between the IMF and the European Union", said one Greek official told Reuters. Sources in Brussels and Washington share this view. "Europe wants more time to see what will happen in Spain or Italy, perhaps until after the German elections of 2013," added the official, who prefers to remain anonymous. "The IMF, however, wants to reach a solution and the problem."
The elections held last spring has jeopardized this goal and have caused delays. The Greek Government has asked for two more years to meet the target set by Brussels and have calculated that this extension will cost an additional € 15,000 million, although other estimates put the figure at 30,000 million.
Greece live on Wednesday a 24-hour strike against new cuts in the Government's conservative Andonis Samaras being prepared at the request of its international lenders. "Now it is clear to the IMF that Athens will need more time, more money or both," said an official from the troika told Reuters.
