Retail sales have shown signs of recovery in August from the previous month but still in negative numbers compared to the same month last year. The retail transactions were down 2.1% compared to August 2011, which represented a small oxygen pump after the fall of 7% in July, as published this morning by the National Statistics Institute. The data accumulated 26 months of declines. Sales were replaced in August thanks largely to the increase in VAT, which came into force on 1 September and influenced the development of many consumer purchases.
Still, the cuts approved by the Government in search of the deficit target of 6.3% are becoming increasingly heavy slabs for Spanish households. The gradual lowering of salaries, limitation of aid accompanied by tax increases pose increasingly deep wounds for consumption, which is diminished as the recession deepens.
Service stations are the first to suffer the drop in sales with a decrease of 5.2%. The increase in fuel prices, which have been annotated highs week after week during the past year, influence the mood of consumers, more reluctant to use his car, in view of the data this morning.
Sales of food products increased by 0.2% in August, while those of non-food products fell by 3.5%. For modes of distribution, all trade sales decreased, except the big chains, which rose 0.2%. The biggest drop was recorded by small chains (-4.5%), followed by unilocalizadas companies (-2.8%) and department stores, which reduced sales by 1.2%.
Employment in the retail sector continued to decline in August and recorded a decline of 1.2% from the same month of 2011, with decreases in 15 regions. As for sales, only three regions (La Rioja, Basque Country and Extremadura) increased turnover in the eighth month of the year. With the exception of September 2011, when there was no change at all, employment in retail since August 2008 has experienced negative annual rates.
