If Spain flights will increase by 10% could increase its GDP in 673 million, according to a study
Madrid EP 25 SEP 2012 - 12:47 CET
The director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for Spain and Portugal, Javier Valdés, said that "does not understand" the rise in air taxes approved by the government or the possible increase in 2013, as the industry air "so important" for tourism, a sector that is highly relevant for the Spanish economy.
Valdes recalled that eight out of ten tourists coming to Spain are by plane, noting that the airline business contributed to the Spanish economy 4.852 million euros in 2009 and generated about 260,000 jobs, so it is appealing to the understanding of the authorities.
"I have a message for governments to support the airline industry, but not only for the industry but for the economy of their countries," he underlined, and then point out that "certain" Executives do not consider the importance of airlines.
The official cited a study that says that if Spain will increase its air connectivity by 10% could increase on 673 million annual gross domestic product in the long term.
