A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.9 has shaken the depths off the coast of Costa Rica, according to the American Center of Geological Survey (USGS, its acronym in English) and forced to activate the tsunami warning. The quake's epicenter was located five miles from the coast, near the city of Samara, and 20 kilometers deep. As indicated by the Costa Rican newspaper La Nacion, the quake was felt "strongly" in the Central Valley and caused damage to homes and cutting electricity. The Costa Rican Red Cross has said that for the moment there have been no casualties.
The Center for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC, its acronym in English) has launched a tsunami warning in the Pacific coast of Costa Rica and neighboring regions and has not ruled out expanding the areas at risk while evaluating the scope the earthquake.
PTWC assessment has categorized as high risk to the Pacific coast with its epicenter in northwestern Costa Rica and "a threat assessment is underway further enlarged and the possibility that Hawaii is raised to alert or warning" . For now, the territories are warning the Pacific coasts of Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua.
The president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, is meeting in the National Emergency Commission (CNE) with relief authorities to assess the situation and coordinate the work to follow.
The Center has lifted the tsunami warning for the initial costs of El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru.
