The expert mission sent to Athens by the troika - the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) -, the Greek government has recommended a deep labor market flexibility, including the reduction of costs dismissal and lengthen the work week to six days, according to the Greek daily Imerisia, citing an email sent on 31 August at the Greek Ministries of Finance and Labour.
The authenticity of this e-mail and its contents, has said the agency EFE, was confirmed by a Finance Ministry source, who declined to reveal the details. Troika inspectors are in Greece since last week, but the heads of mission will arrive on Friday to negotiate with the government in Athens, with the aim of monitoring the new savings plan valued at 11,600 million euros. The troika must give approval to new budget cuts to European partners agree to release a new tranche of 31,000 million euro bailout granted to Greece in March.
The troika proposal focuses on "reducing the high cost of entry and exit of workers from the labor market" as well as "increase the flexibility of working hours." In this sense, the envoys of the international creditors of Athens recommend the Government to extend to six day work week and reduced to eleven hours set minimum rest between shifts or remove restrictions on the morning shift changes and later as required by the employer, says the newspaper Imerisia.
Facilitate layoffs
Experts also ask the Executive Antonis Samaras halving the period of notice of layoffs by employers and some amount of severance pay. It also aims to reduce the contribution to the Social Security Fund companies pay per employee, despite the worsening of the collection of the State in this regard.
"These are not new proposals, as the troika haciéndlas takes time. But, for now, are only proposals, does not mean that the Greek government should accept," he told Efe the ministry source, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter . The unemployment rate in Greece in May stood at 23.1% (54.9% in the case of children under 25 years) and the purchasing of Greek workers has fallen to levels of the past three decades, according to estimates unions.
