World tourism grew by 4% during 2012. The president of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Taleb Rifai, has advanced this morning growth figures in the tourism sector globally, part of the statistical study published UN agency next week. The Jordanian, who heads the London-based agency since 2010, also estimated that 2013 will see a slowdown in the expansion of international tourism, whose growth figures will be lower than in 2012, though, he said, will remain above 2%.
By region, Rifai stressed the Asian tourism recovery after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011. Tourism growth in Asia last year overtook growth in Europe, where despite the crisis there was expansion in Central and Eastern Europe. The president of the WTO has predicted that southern Europe did not repeat last year boom that occurred in 2011, travelers who bet then for the safety of the Spanish and Italian coasts to the instability that led to the Arab Spring. The rise of tourism has been bolstered by the strong performance of the sector in South America.
At a breakfast briefing attended by the Spanish Industry Minister Jose Manuel Soria, Rifai has estimated that tourism will grow on average by 3.3% annually until 2030, with an annual increase of between 40 and 42 million passengers. The Jordanian has indicated that it is possible to speak of a new model of development or recovery without referring to the tourism sector.
