A photo of Gaza, 2006, published as if the SaharaSpanish media, including El Pais, mistakenly reproduced the image of a Palestinian victims like Saharawi
COUNTRY - Madrid - 12/11/2010
But the image was not the Sahara or even nowadays. On June 21, 2006 an Israeli missile struck a house in the Gaza Strip, with the result of a woman dead and several wounded, including two small children who were treated at a local hospital. And this time the corresponding error image were released today by leading Spanish media. Its author was Ibraheem Abu Mustafa and that same June 21 Reuters news agency distributed it.
Several readers have been alerted to this wording, which at the same time has proven through the archives of the various agencies that it was a photograph of 2006. The propaganda war through the pictures is very common in conflicts, and also the use of children as victims. THE COUNTRY is responsible for publishing the picture without having verified its authenticity and apologizes for it. Efe has also issued a notice to rectify the error.
The official news agency of Morocco at this time includes the error from the Spanish media. The Ministry of Communication in Rabat, said the agency MAP (Maghreb Arabe Presse), denounced "spirited practices and falsifying facts and drifts that have fallen in the Spanish media correspondents in Morocco in its coverage of events violence and vandalism committed in Al Laayoune. On November 3, the Moroccan Foreign Minister Taieb Fassi-Fihri, accused in the presence of its counterpart Trinidad Jimenez, the Spanish press excesses and "confuse his wishes with reality."
The coverage of incidents in Laayoune has been almost impossible for the Spanish media, who have been denied access to the former colony. Today, the special envoys of the SER have been expelled to the Canaries.
