The European Parliament has called on Morocco to support a United Nations independent investigation into the events in the field of Gdaim Izik and Laayoune. MEPs also asked the Moroccan authorities to leave the area free access to the press and international observers.
In its resolution, agreed by a large majority among the main parliamentary groups and therefore using a moderate tone, "take note" of the Moroccan Parliament's intention to open a commission of inquiry into the facts. However, MEPs believe that "the United Nations would be the most appropriate for an independent international investigation to clarify what happened, the deaths and disappearances."
The resolution was approved despite Morocco's attempts to postpone the pronouncement of the European Parliament until December after MEPs hear his version of events. Moroccan Foreign Minister Taieb Fassi, is scheduled to appear next day on December 1 at the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament.
José Ignacio Salafranca, European Popular Party spokesman in the European Parliament, said in the previous debate that "Morocco is a positive and active member of the European Union, and is also a key strategic ally in the containment of radical Islamic fundamentalism." But Salafranca added that "Parliament is the institution where the pulse beats Democratic Union and has the unwavering commitment to the cause of human rights." And he said that "if these rights are unknown can not look away and have to raise their voices and say what are the principles that motivate us."
In his speech, the Socialist MEP Antonio Masi has emphasized that "the camp is the paradigm of the distance between Morocco and has stated that" Morocco rebukes cone hate people who felt differently. " Raul Romeva, ICV MEP and Vice President Greens / EFA, has stated that "after many attempts by Morocco to prevent this Parliament to rule on the human rights situation in Western Sahara, we should welcome that in this Moroccan time the lobby has failed. " Romeva said "you can not put the same level on both sides, they have the same responsibility and use the same weapons."
Willy Meyer, MEP, international coordinator of United Left, was rated "very positively" to the Development Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, stressing the need for the Saharawi people to exercise their right to self determination. Meyer said that "it is unacceptable permanent intrusion of the Moroccan administration at this institution. He recalled that Morocco has no sovereignty over Western Sahara, so Parliament must send a clear message to the international community and the Sahrawi are those who have to decide their future through a referendum of self-determination. " The MEP has been held in particular that "the resolution recognizes that Western Sahara has not completed the process of decolonization."
