Jiménez said that Spain has always defended the Saharan people to self-determinationForeign Minister defends government action on the crisis in the camp of El Aaiun and rejects accusations of laxity
COUNTRY - Madrid - 15/11/2010
"Spain has always defended the right to self-determination for the Saharawi people." This has been assured by the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trinidad Jimenez, said in the Cadena SER, where he defended the government's action since a week ago, the Moroccan forces dismantled by force Izik Agdaym camp, near Laayoune where had gathered thousands of Saharawi in defense of their rights along with dozens of activists from other countries. Jimenez denies that the Government acted with warmth and reaffirms the warranties for Spanish activists who are still hiding in Laayoune by Moroccan fear of reprisals.
The minister has argued that the problem of the Sahara, former Spanish territory that left Madrid in 1975 and self-determination claims of Morocco, is not a bilateral issue between Spain and Morocco, but the international community and should be the UN to settle the issue.
Therefore, it rejects accusations that the Government acted with warmth in defense of the former Spanish colony. "The Spanish government has been rather weak, has maintained permanent contact [with Rabat] and demanded access to the media" to Laayoune, said the minister. "We express our concern for the facts, the fact is made more forcefully or higher does not imply a better response. We could have used other expressions that have fallen harder better to some, but if he had cut the dialogue [with Rabat ]. Would we be helpful? ".
In fact, the Minister has defended strongly the bilateral relations between Spain and Morocco. "With a neighboring country to do some rules to protect the interests of both, there must be mutual respect, involvement, mutual interests and respect," he said, noting the "important partner in the fight against terrorism, drugs, migration." In any case, argued that "this is not incompatible with the defense of human rights, that we have said from the outset." "We are asked anything that has not dialogue with Morocco?" He asked.
Finally, the minister has referred to the two activists, the Mexican Catalan Antonio Velazquez and Elizabeth Terrace, which are hidden in Laayoune by Moroccan fear of reprisals, and today denounced the "genocide" taking place in Rabat Sahara . Jimenez has said that he has given his "personal guarantee that they could leave." Yesterday I made two, Extremadura and the Canary Soper Javier García Silvia. "In the other case have chosen to stay and the Government of Spain will guarantee its security," he said.
