Vienna, March 24 ( Reuters) - An international conference on the status of nuclear safety in Vienna began today with a call to learn from the disaster in Fukushima ( Japan) and prevent future accidents.
"Three years after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant , this meeting should allow us to take a stand on the lessons to be learned from this accident ," said Andre -Claude Lacoste French , President of the Sixth Review Meeting of the Convention Nuclear Safety (CNS ) .
This conference brings together experts from over 70 countries in Vienna to discuss in the next two weeks the state of nuclear safety and what steps can be taken to strengthen it.
Lacoste reminded reporters that there were no deaths directly due to radioactivity from Fukushima, but acknowledged it was "unacceptable " high nuclear contamination left by the accident, so you should analyze how to avoid such a situation.
A strong earthquake in Japan in March 2011 generated a tsunami that hit the Fukushima plant , causing the fusion of the nuclei of three of its six reactors and subsequent radiation leak forced the evacuation of thousands.
Since it is considered the worst nuclear accident since the Chernobyl (Ukraine ) in 1986 , the countries of the CSN have been taken to strengthen security , as " tests" for reactors updating protocols emergency and increased international cooperation.
Within the CSN have also established mutual security patches between the signatories of the international agreement , among other measures to improve transparency and cooperation in this matter.
