Zapatero Moratinos sent to Algeria in crisis in Western SaharaFormer Foreign Minister Bouteflika is trying to intervene with the Polisario
M. GONZÁLEZ / I. Cembrero - Seoul / Madrid - 11/11/2010
The Spanish prime minister has been quick to recover a minister who broke up last month, Miguel Angel Moratinos, to give your portfolio to Trinidad Jiménez.
José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero sent yesterday, as his representative, to Moratinos to Algiers on a plane the Air Force is twofold: to try to defuse regional tension over the Sahara to try to save the summit for the Mediterranean Union, scheduled for completion within 10 days in Barcelona, according to Algerian sources. From Vice President of Government and Foreign Affairs says the visit is only connected to the Barcelona summit.
Interestingly, Moratinos's visit was not announced by La Moncloa, but by their hosts through the Algerian official news agency APS. Upon arrival at the airport was waiting Boumedienne the foreign minister of Algeria, Mourad Medelci. Later he was scheduled to be received by President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
During the six years he spent at the head of Spanish diplomacy, Moratinos did not have a cordial relationship with Algeria, where he was considered too pro-Moroccan.
The goal seems unattainable Moratinos. The dismantling, on Monday, the protest camp Saharawi Laayoune rekindled tension between Algiers and Rabat. King Mohamed VI of Morocco on Saturday gave a speech in which he lashed out harshly against Algeria, the main sponsor of the Saharawi Polisario Front.
In addition, the Israeli decision to build 1,300 new homes in the Arab sector of Jerusalem has been practically ruined the appointment of Barcelona, which the Arab countries refuse to take action under Spanish diplomatic sources acknowledge.
Informational opacity surrounding the confrontation of Laayoune was discussed yesterday at the Congress of Deputies.
In his speech at the plenary session, Minister of the Presidency, Ramon Jauregui, referred to the prohibition of Morocco that foreign journalists can travel to the Sahara. Two other Spanish and French journalists were unable to board yesterday's flight from Casablanca to Laayoune.
Jauregui made a statement in which he implied that Spain recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the full access of journalists to this area: "We can not forget that admission to the territory is part of what is called the hard core of sovereignty a country. " "That hit our ability to intervene with the Moroccan government's absolute refusal to allow access (...)". The sentence prompted a barrage of criticism and even the hue in the corridors Jáuregui his words: "I have not made any acknowledgment of the sovereignty (...)".
Despite the correction of Jauregui, the Spanish government maintains a timid attitude in relation to the events of Laayoune. Unlike, for example, the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner condemned the expulsion Jiménez, Rabat, three regional parliament and a Spanish MEP.
The word "conviction" that the government has erased from his vocabulary itself was last used as a socialist, Guillermo Fernández Vara, president of the Junta de Extremadura. Meanwhile, the Socialist deputy José Antonio Pérez Tapias went further and wrote in his blog that Morocco had unleashed "violence, destruction and death" on the famous Izik Agdaym camp.
