CRISIS
UK protects deposits in the British branch of Laiki Cyprus

The money deposited 15,000 people in the UK subsidiary of Cyprus Laiki bank will be protected under British law, as confirmed by the Bank of England today.
The central bank explained that these deposits are exempted from levy of up to 60% could be applied in Cyprus as part of a rescue plan to pull the country out of its financial crisis.
Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA), a new organization associated with the Bank of England, said that 270 million pounds (318 million euros) in deposits that were in Laiki Bank have been transferred to Cyprus, so that will be protected by British compensation system.
This system guarantees up to 85,000 pounds (about 100,000 euros) per person and could not be applied to Laiki by his office in the UK a branch and a subsidiary, as is the case of the Bank of Cyprus.
The warranty applies to most customers, except to those with no credit line discovered in their current accounts, which remain at the Laiki, also known as the Cyprus Popular Bank.
These people should contact Laiki Bank UK, while those who did have credit must reapply to the Bank of Cyprus, said the ARP.
Customers with mortgages and loans will instead transferred to the Bank of Cyprus in Nicosia and will be contacted in due course, but must continue to make payments, said the British regulator.
The ARP had been negotiating with the Cypriot authorities to protect British depositors after these announced it would close the Laiki and integrate the Bank of Cyprus.
According to the latest reports from Nicosia, encumbrance or removed on unsecured deposits Bank of Cyprus may be up to 60%.
The Central Bank of Cyprus issued a few days ago a decree contemplated that in an early stage 37.5% of deposits in excess of 100,000 euros will be converted into shares of the bank.
However, this takes could be higher because 22.5% will be "frozen" for 90 days, at which time and depending on the recapitalization of the bank, will also become actions or, if favorable, returned to depositors.
The Bank of Cyprus has undergone extensive restructuring as a result of the agreement of the Government of Nicosia with the troika of international lenders, which provides for the liquidation of Banco Popular and its division into a bank "good" and "bad".
