Thirteen foreign ministers of the European Union, including the Spanish, have asked the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the institution to continue to ahead with plans to require that consumer goods produced in Israeli settlements considered illegal in the occupied Golan Heights, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with a type of labeling that distinguishes them from the rest, so that consumers have this information when deciding whether or not to purchase.
"It's an important step to ensure that there will be a correct and consistent implementation of consumer protection laws and legislation of EU labeling," say the ministers in the letter, dated April 12 and obtained by this newspaper Friday . "The correct labeling of products is necessary to assure that our consumers are not misled by false information. If European consumers have confidence in the fact that they know the origin of the goods they buy, the producers of both the area within the Green Line of Israel and Palestinians will benefit, "they add.
With this measure, the EU ministers seek to distinguish Israeli products manufactured within the borders established after the 1967 war (the limits are known as Green Line) of those who are made in Jewish settlements in Palestinian territory. Among the signatories are in addition to Spanish Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo, the foreign ministers of Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and the UK.
Previously, in February, Ashton sent a letter to the 27 members in notifying them I was looking for ways in which the EU drives that imports of settlements in the occupied Golan, the West Bank and East Jerusalem exhibit label identifying them as such. "The EU and its Member States have a clear position on settlement activity in the occupied territories. And directly related to this is the question of the products imported by the EU from points beyond the borders of Israel in 1967 and correctly labeled, "he wrote.
So far, only the governments of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands have taken the unilateral decision to require settlements made products including its exact origin labeling. On March 6, the Dutch Finance Ministry issued its own directive, "after consultation with the European Commission," as claimed in the official document. It called the specific labeling of fruit and vegetables, wine, honey, olive oil, fish, meat, eggs and all kinds of cosmetics.
