Poverty is growing in Spain as a result of the crisis. It is measured in low-income, unemployed and deprivation, and the cocktail of all that makes a record: between 2009 and 2010, one million more joined the Spanish total risk of poverty or poverty, a total of 11, 6 million people, according to data from the Network Against Poverty and Social Exclusion (EAPN in the acronym). Most of the increase occurs in Valencia, Murcia and Catalonia, which total more than half a million people at risk and increases recorded over three percentage points.
Leaving aside income (a criterion excessive weight in this study EAPN) other factors such as material deprivation, yielding curious results. Murcia, the most affected by this criterion, have grown from 6.3% of its population from privation in 2009 to 12.6% in 2010. Or Extremadura, from 1.4% to 5%. What does this mean? That these people are suffering material deprivation hard cash that do not suffer some even receive the same income. Maybe they can not pay the rent or make home heating, households in which meat, chicken or fish will eat less than three days per week, with no car, washing machine, color TV, phone or some people can not afford an unexpected expense, much less take a little vacation. Who accumulates four of these nine deficiencies found in a critical situation. And 12 communities have increased the percentage of the population is struggling as the aforementioned materials.
This 32 year-old, whose initials are E. G., is among them. He lives in Madrid in social housing because their job went down with the crisis. The apartment he bought in the Lavapiés had structural problems and had to leave, but is paying interest on your mortgage, a situation that hurts even more. "Now collecting unemployment and at least I have accommodation but fail to perceive the euro in December 1000. By then I hope I have found something, but the jobs offered are a pitiful wages, "he complains. Is administrative, orphan and without any family network to cushion the fall. "I'm not looking for administrative, echo to everything I see," he explains.

High unemployment in the home affects the results
Unemployment is a direct cause of poverty, so it is one of the factors taken into account to measure it. Canary Islands, Andalusia and Extremadura bulkier showing the percentages in the relationship between the number of people without work in a home and those of working age. That was in 2009. A year later, all three have worsened the situation. Approximately 11% of the Canary Islands and Andalusia and Extremadura 10.5% of the matches that low-intensity criteria in employment by households in 2010.
This study measures poverty using similar criteria for all of Europe, so is lacking in nuance. It's hard to believe that 41% of Extremadura are on the threshold of poverty, or thirty or Andalusians. Not even one in four Spanish. Recognized by the study author Gabriela Jorquera. "There are nuances that are not taken into account, for example, if you are talking about the field or the city, because prices change, both housing and food. Nor can we take into account the underground economy. " And all that much in Spain could change the numbers. But the trend is undeniable. With the same criteria, more or less refined, poverty is growing.

12 communities worse off in material deprivation
And it rains in the wet, because poverty is growing in times of crisis, poverty rates that already existed and were not improved in good times. "Sure, it's like unemployment, we have five million unemployed, but only three of the crisis is that we already had two before and did not take action to mitigate," says Carlos Susie, the president of the EAPN in Spain.

The chronicity of poverty is a certain risk. Michael uses this fictitious name to tell his situation: a rented room with others, food in the center and a minimum paid inclusion gives for some other expenses such as snuff. "It's hard to accept my present condition and perhaps I will say this seems an artifact of defense, but I'm okay with my life calm and flat. I came to live on the street, at first almost take it as an adventure, you say that if you have touched bottom, but no, there's nothing fun, "he says. You are about to turn 65, so your minimum income will be a minimum pension. In his case there is no family mattress, quite the contrary, recent history, five years ago, is almost a classic business goes under, entering marriage bit, selling the house, goodbye to BMW convertible. And a note of humor while addressing the judge and told him sentenced to eight months of house arrest, "Yes, I laugh, Your Honor, because I have no home," he said. The judge was about to provide one with good bars, but realized that the situation was laughable if it was to mourn and that was all.

Steps are being taken in the opposite direction, "says Carlos Susies
For poverty is not chronic do not just ride out the recession, we must improve in times of growth. "Now we are suffering not only the logical consequences of a crisis, but we are taking steps in the opposite direction to that recommended, such as filing social protection policies, freezing the minimum wage. If politicians have to set an example of austerity, give it to others, "Carlos is outraged Susie. The president of the EAPN believes that there are situations of "true indecency" that are driving the citizens of the political institutions, "because they are seeing the best are paid in cash and cash, while the poorest paid only in promises and future. Let there who shields the retirement pay is angry ...", millionaires.
Susies believes it is also a mistake to take the same measures for different countries. "We know that the situation is not easy, but the austerity is not giving the expected results. One must know how to collect, prosecute criminals who cheat, take the underground economy and stimulate the economy. And, of course, establish mechanisms for equity, "recommended as the devastating conclusion of the study data.
