In the list of winners of this award because of age, are counted from the philosopher Karl R. Popper, who won in its inaugural issue, to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who won in 2010, to the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, the economist Amartya Sen, the politician Jacques Delors, the writer Doris Lessing video artist Bill Viola or.

This year the distinction was awarded to Japan's Haruki Murakami, author of Tokyo blues, a work whose publication in Castilian, in June 2005 led to a most remarkable publishing phenomenon. Murakami has been selected among 196 candidates nominated by 225 institutions in fifty countries, in addition to those made by a jury headed by President of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, and leads the philosopher Xavier Rubert de Ventos. The minutes of this panel highlights several aspects of Murakami. First, the global nature of their work, able to leap borders and equally interested in areas as diverse as Europe and Asia. Second, creating a personal world of great complexity, the living end. And third, the value of Murakami's work as a bridge between distant cultures.

There are many countries that provide similar awards at International Premi Catalunya. These awards honor elected officials and allow the organizers to associate its name to the internationally recognized characters, while they seek screening. It is perfectly legitimate operations. But unsafe, since every year some palmareses take shape that are somewhat a mirror of the ideals and identity of the convening countries. In recent years it has appreciated in some of these awards drift into the world of celebrity, whether from the field of sport or entertainment. Which has been interpreted as a desire to prevail on other considerations, the echo that such figures can contribute to the conveners. This is not the case of Catalonia International Prize, whose winners abound scientists, writers and activists of irreproachable social commitment. As Murakami himself, whose priority is to write a play to help lift the spirits of his countrymen, severely beaten months ago by natural disasters and nuclear.
