No digáis prostituta. Utilice mujeres que ejercen la prostitución, mujeres en contexto de prostitución o mujeres en situación de explotación sexual. Así no se "reduce la persona a una faceta o actividad de su vida, con fuertes connotaciones negativas". Estas son algunas de las recomendaciones de una guía de cobertura periodística de este tema que hoy ha presentado la Agencia ABITS del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona y la Asociación de Mujeres Periodistas de Cataluña.
El texto, en el que han participado profesionales de diversos medios, incluido EL PAÍS, surge tras el análisis de más de 400 noticias sobre prostitución publicadas entre 2008 y 2012. El grupo de trabajo, en el que también había representantes de las autoridades, concluyó que las informaciones a menudo reproducen los estereotipos que estigmatizan a las mujeres que ejercen la prostitución, tratadas como sujetos pasivos, sin voz ni autoridad, y muchas veces se publica o se difunde su imagen sin su permiso.
El foco de las informaciones sobre prostitución recae en las mujeres que ejercen esta actividad y obvian otros actores de la situación, como los clientes o las personas que se encargan de las redes de tráfico de personas y se lucran. Esta es otra de las principales conclusiones a las que ha llegado el grupo de trabajo.
"Los medios deben reflejar que en el entorno de la prostitución hay situaciones de desigualdad", ha explicado la concejala de la Mujer y Derechos Civiles del Ayuntamiento de Barcelona, Francina Vila, durante la presentación del texto. Por su parte, Bárbara Melenchón, directora del Programa Municipal de la Mujer, ha recordado que en muchas ocasiones se vincula a las mujeres que ejercen la prostitución con la delincuencia, la inseguridad ciudadana o la exclusión social.
Melenchón ha recordado la importancia de diferenciar en los textos periodísticos entre la prostitución ejercida voluntariamente y el tráfico de seres humanos con fines de explotación sexual, o prostitución forzada. "Hay que evitar la reproducción de mitos y estereotipos; no banalizar ni hacer sensacionalismo o apología entorno de la prostitución", añadió la experta. La guía lo llama el mito 'Pretty Woman', con referencia a la película de Richard Gere y Julia Roberts, que "difunde una imagen idealizada, glamorosa y romántica del ejercicio de la prostitución".
