Markets live these days pending the delicate Spanish health. Increasingly wary of Spain's ability to meet its payment obligations. Four years have passed since the outbreak of financial crisis that remains unresolved. During this period, Spain has doubled its debt in both absolute and relative terms, according to data released Friday by the Bank of Spain. That is precisely one of the reasons for the distrust of markets over Spain: the speed with which the country has increased their financial needs.
In the first quarter of 2008, when financial markets began to spiral hysterical, indebtedness of the Spanish government reached 35.5% of GDP, which resulted in a debt of 377.917 million euros, the lowest since early nineties, when you start the time series published by the Bank of Spain. Four years later, the government must 774.549 million euros, 72.1% of GDP. The level of debt is fast approaching the target set by the Government by the end of the year, set at 79.8% of GDP. However, the level of debt already registered by all the government is already the highest since 1990, when it starts the time series of the Bank of Spain. It is also the highest since 1913, according to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The rapid growth of Spanish debt is due in large part to the regions. In the past year, the indebtedness of the communities has increased by 15.74%, which translates to 19.736 million Euros. Autonomy were mainly responsible for last year's budget imbalance. The deficit of the regional governments in 2011 amounted to 3.3% versus 1.5% who were targeted. The difficulty of communities to control their spending has pushed the regional executives to pull debt financed. But distrust of markets also makes a dent in these administrations that collect outstanding maturities of 35.782 million this year.
The community remains indebted Catalonia, whose duties account for 21% of GDP. The Valencia (20.2%), Balearic Islands (16.7%), Castilla-La Mancha (16.6%) and Navarra (14.5%) are above the average debt level of communities, in the 13.5%, four points more than the previous quarter. For its part, Galicia (12.8%), Extremadura (11.7%), La Rioja (11.7%), Murcia (10.8%), Aragon (10.9%), Andalusia (10.6 %), Basque Country (10.2%), Cantabria (9.8%), Asturias (9.7%), Castilla y León (9.7%), Canary Islands (9.1%) and Madrid (8, 7%).
By debt volume, absolute values, Catalonia has the dubious honor of being more autonomy payment obligations, with 42,000 million. Valencia, with 20.832 million, Madrid (16572000) and Andalusia (15373000) also accumulate heavy financial burdens.
The councils maintain the path of debt reduction that began in the second quarter pasado. No However, the city of Madrid is still the town with far more debt (6,733,000), almost half of all debt of all the provincial capitals of Spain, amounting to 14.755 million. Barcelona accumulates 1,090 million of outstanding obligations, Valencia, 880 million, Zaragoza, 796 million, Malaga and Seville 760 million, 457 million.
